Bad Elster is one of the oldest spa resorts in Germany. It is located in Vogtland at an altitude of about 500 m southwest of Chemnitz in the valley of the river Weisse-Elster near the border with the Czech Republic. These places are known for their healing climate. The resort is surrounded by low wooded mountains, which protect it from sudden weather changes.
The water of the three thermal springs of the spa town of Bad Elster has a rejuvenating effect and gives vacationers new life energy. The spa treatment has been offered in Bad Elster for more than 160 years, and the atmosphere and architectural appearance of the city delight the soul and body.
Bad Elster owes its resort status to the springs Moritzquelle and Marienquelle, located near Badelplatz. The Moritzkwelle spring was first mentioned in written sources as early as 1531 under the name "Elster acid waters". Water sources are used both for therapeutic baths and for ingestion. Bad Elster has been known as a functioning resort for over a century and a half. The Saxon Resort Museum is located in the city.
The architectural ensemble of Bad Elster began to take shape in the early second half of the 19th century, known as the Grunder era. At that time, Germany and Austria-Hungary were gripped by an unprecedented economic boom, and the Gründers (the company's founder) were gaining fortunes in the shortest possible time.
The two-storey Royal Kurzal was built in 1888–1890. in the Neo-Renaissance style and resembles the Italian palaces of the Renaissance.
