Parchim is a city in Germany, the administrative center of the Parchim district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, located on the River Elda, 40 km southeast of the administrative center of the federal state.
The name of the city is borrowed from the Slavic languages. According to one version, the name of the city is associated with the name of the pagan sun god Parkhom.
Parkhim is 840 years old. In its nearly thousand-year history, it has survived several fires, two plague epidemics that killed most townspeople, the rampant Inquisition judging the Parkhim witches, and the invasion of Napoleon's soldiers in 1806, which, however, was the last major shock to the city. The two world wars of the twentieth century bypassed Parchim, so that the past two centuries have been relatively calm, except for the emotional impulse caused by the unification of Germany.
