New construction permit figures have emerged in Germany: despite the COVID-19 crisis, a number of new construction projects have been approved. However, they will not be able to be realized quickly.
MARCH 29, 2021
The pandemic did not lead to a reduction in building permits last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this number increased by 2.2 percent compared to 2019 to 368,400 people. This includes both permits for the construction of new buildings and construction work on existing ones.
Wiesbaden statisticians explained that in this millennium, since 2016, the number of approvals for the construction of new apartments has increased every year. Even a sharp decline last December (minus 11 percent) could not stop the upward trend for the year as a whole.
Last year, according to statistics, about 320.2 thousand apartments were approved in new buildings - 2.9 percent more than a year earlier. Two-apartment houses were in great demand, where the number of permits rose sharply (plus 20.5 percent). Permits for the construction of private houses increased by 2.4 percent, apartment buildings - by 0.4 percent.
Permits for new housing construction are an important indicator of construction in the fight against housing shortages in many cities. However, some projects, although approved, have not yet been built, for example, due to the fact that construction companies are overloaded with orders due to the boom in the real estate market. Thus, today the number of building permits far exceeds the number of finished buildings.
