Görlitz is known for its interesting history, the intertwining of ancient streets and architecture that managed to avoid destruction during World War II. The city is divided into two parts, which belong to different countries. It is located right on the border and after the war it so happened that the division of the countries took place on the river Neisse, dividing the city into two: the Polish part was called Zgorzelec and the German part was left with the original name - Gerlitz.
The history of the city goes back to the era of the Roman Empire: during excavations found ancient Roman coins. Then Germanic tribes settled here, but after the great migration of peoples in their place came the Slavs. The name of the city comes from the Slavic "burn".
The first mention of the city appeared in documents from 1071. Until the 15th century, the city was divided between the Czechs and the Poles, but only under the Hungarian king from the 15th to the middle of the 16th century did Görlitz reach its peak. During this time, many buildings were built in the city, including the Gothic and Renaissance styles.
From 1618, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes marched well through Görlitz, severely destroying the city. And in 1816 the city was included in the Prussian province of Silesia, which was the beginning of another rise for Goerlitz. In the middle of the century, a railway appeared here, which contributed to the even faster development of the city. Most of the old buildings that have survived in the city to this day are buildings from the heyday of Goerlitz in the middle of the twentieth century.
In the middle of the XX century the city was divided into two parts and lived a new life, which we have found now. And this life is very unusual. In the past, when countries were in even one bloc, the border area was strictly controlled. Not everyone was allowed to live in houses overlooking the river, but only proven people. And now, during the Schengen agreement, the border here is very conditional.
